Examinations such as FCE are extremely popular with learners of Englidh. It is important, therefore, that the backwash is not too negative, and  that the exam facilities effective teaching and relevant learning. Teaching and testing are two different activities in wich there is sometimes, but not always, an overlap, and preparing students for an examination like FCE can, if we are not careful, get us into a testing groove. It can also be difficult to protect good teaching from the overwhelming needs of learners who want, and perhaps need, to pass an examination. My overall concern when looking at these materials, therefore, was whether they could achieve two objectives: aid real learning, and help the student to pass the exam.
