The Gramática Inglesa which Sánchez Benedito wrote in 1975 is still being printed year after year because it has been so enthusiastically received by students and teachers of English. The various editions which have been revised, amplified and improved by the author are a clear indication that the book continues to satisfy a demand, in spite of the quantity and quality of the competition from other titles of a similar type on the market. However in recent years there has been a noticeable and steady improvement in the linguistic and communicative competence in English of Spanish students at all educational levels. This fact compels us to bring out this new English version of the Grammar to make it accessible as a work of reference for the study of grammatical rules to those advanced students who previously had to turn to other descriptive grammars written by native speakers or teams of grammarians. Sánchez Beneditos Gramática Inglesa, with its clarity of expression, contrastive approach and scholarly insight, has formed the basis of this New English Grammar for Spanish Speakers which has also had the benefit of the assistance, advice and translation skills of a writing team consisting of colleagues working in a similar field. The result of this collaboration is the present up-to-date grammar of the English language which combines tradition with the fresh approach of two differing perspectives: the authors research background in the grammar of both Spanish and English. This has enabled them to compare the two rule systems in such a way that certain aspects, peculiarities and fine points of grammar, which often escape the notice of the native English language specialist, emerge more clearly. As a new feature, this version of The English Grammar includes exercises in every chapter, which will help students consolidate the rules and encourage them to discuss the subtler grammatical problems.
