A subversive and at times truly perverse cross between high-fantasy and steampunk. You dont need to do drugs when there are books as trippy as this out there! The main character, Jane, is a changeling—a child stolen from our reality and taken into Faerie. There she works alongside other urchins in a Dickensian factory producing huge flying war machines—iron dragons. When she comes of age she is destined never to fly, but only to serve as a breeder producing half-human pilots. In terror, Jane escapes. As a human, she never quite fits into Faerie (a malevolent, magic-ridden world that seems to have no moral centre) no matter where she flees. The world of the book is an unsettling place for the reader as well. It’s a many-layered and beautifully dark experience that unfolds to a surprising final resolution.
